Mark Kraushaar: Isolated Material Properties

May 31, 2023 by PBQ Leave a Comment

Isolated material properties are abstractions

their properties being definable and observable

only through their interaction with other systems.

Neils Bohr

There’s a certain way the man

in the blue suit moves one foot forward

under his desk, forward but slightly sideways

so not only slowing sound waves in Minsk

but bending star light in Bruge.

And there’s a particular way

that because his right hand rests on his

opened book, the faintest shadow crossing

the sideboard and chipped bowl,

even your own eighth grade teacher’s

second ex-husband’s former

banker’s first thought of the day

wobbles on its axis, spins and tips back

thereby slightly brightening, then subtly dulling

his sister’s half dozen collectible forks

spooned neatly together nightly

in the cabinet closest the stove,

just left of the pie tin,

just right of the marjoram
