Carolyn Busa kicked off the March 28 Slam the way we like it: with talk of slabs, boob (yes, just one), and those ever-elusive Olive Garden fortune cookies. Busa had us tearing up in the best way as she delivered a refreshingly original set that was relatable to all in attendance. Who knew being treated like a slab of meat was such a turn-on for this vegetarian?
After a round of thunderous applause for Busa, host Steve Volk took the stage and the writing began. Do we even need to sing the praises of all the fabulous writers that went up and read their impromptu work? I doubt it, but it doesn’t hurt. We are constantly amazed by every single brave soul that takes on the lexical challenges we toss at them. The room was pulsing with creativity and many of our guests did not walk away empty-handed. There were even a few copies of our brand spanking new Print Annual 6 in the prize bag!
During a short intermission, everyone had their cake and ate it too. PBQ’s very own Bryan Dickey was surprised with a birthday cake, and there was plenty to go around. It just goes to show there’s never knowing what surprises await you at a Slam!
Also on the menu: chips. Lots and lots of chips. PBQ held its very first potato chip tasting and judging in conjunction with Lays’ Do Me a Flavor contest. So, did the crowd at the Slam vote Sriracha, Chicken and Waffles, or Cheesy Garlic Bread the winner? Regular old potato chips were unanimously declared the winner, our crowd opting for a fourth choice, all agreeing that the three experimental flavors were equally terrible. Sorry sriracha.
Join us Tuesday, April 9 for a reading at Perch Pub, and Thursday, April 25 for another exciting Slam at the Pen and Pencil Club!
