Lucas Gerber: PROMISES

            For Deb

Deb asks me something while I am shaking out my day
like a carpet over the balcony

Coffee-mate
Ambien
Pistachio bed sheets

Where are all the consonants our species long ago elided

In the mug
voices

DEBBIE:  I don’t care what we have for dinner
                  My sister’s dead

*

If you place a petunia in the refrigerator

Petals disappear
like the features of a face

A darling is a skittish thing

We promise
We break

a glass

Congratulations
she is buried

Restlessness swells like a thumb

*

Under earth the dead begin to multiply

Look here, there

If you focus for long enough you’ll be left still
with only the world we have

Flintstones vitamins
Xanax
Gravestones

In their amphibious hands noises slip
and fail

To say goodbye

Yes I’d like that very much

*

From the sunken life we salvage only the Luz bone
      promises:

All flowers pass through one cold river to the underworld

People rushing through a turnstile

Over buried bodies

Cherry
sentences
continue to bloom

Pink
bells

Look

Here’s one
opening
