Indran Amirthanayagam: Wading into Paradise

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife

there are more than 1.3 million alligators

in its swamps and streams, lagoons and lakes,

and intercoastal passageways. There are also

more than 21 million humans in the state says

 

the World Population Institute. Are you bored

yet, or are you ready for some math? One alligator

equals 21 people. A party with a hundred guests

comes with close to five alligators wading

in nearby water sources. So leash your pets

 

and don’t go splashing drunk. Hold your decorum 

before the evident threat. Write indoors. Do not

barbecue by the water’s edge. Alligators dart out,

seize any moment, need to eat something other 

than fish under Florida moonlight, retirement to paradise,
